Common Passport Renewal Mistakes Indians Make – How to Avoid Them

Passport Renewal Mistakes That Cause Delays – And How to Avoid Them

Your passport is your gateway to the world, and renewing it should be straightforward. However, thousands of Indians face unnecessary delays every year due to common mistakes during the renewal process. At Sky Visa in Indore, we regularly help clients with passport-related queries and know exactly what causes problems. Here are the most common passport renewal mistakes and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Waiting Until Your Passport Expires

Many people wait until their passport has already expired before starting the renewal process. This creates urgency and limits your options.

Solution:

Begin the renewal process when your passport has less than 1 year of validity remaining. Most countries require at least 6 months validity for entry, so an about-to-expire passport limits your travel options even if technically still valid.

Mistake 2: Errors in the Online Application Form

Misspelled names, incorrect dates of birth, wrong address formats, and other typos in the online application form cause rejections and resubmissions.

Solution:

  • Fill the form carefully, matching your existing passport details exactly
  • Double-check every field before submitting
  • If changing any details (name, address), have supporting documents ready
  • Use capital letters as specified

Mistake 3: Wrong Documents for Name Change

Women who have changed their name after marriage often struggle with documentation. Providing incorrect or insufficient name change evidence causes delays.

Solution:

For name changes, carry the marriage certificate, spouse's passport copy, and a joint bank account statement or ration card. Gazette notification may also be required depending on the type of change.

Mistake 4: Not Carrying the Right Documents to the Passport Office

Arriving at the Passport Seva Kendra without required documents wastes your appointment and time.

Solution:

Carry the following for a standard renewal:

  • Original current/expired passport
  • Self-attested copies of the first and last page of your passport
  • Address proof (Aadhaar card is the simplest)
  • Printed application receipt with appointment confirmation
  • Any change-related documents (if applicable)

Mistake 5: Incorrect Passport Size Photographs

Though photos are now taken at the Passport Seva Kendra, some applicants face issues because they do not meet dress code requirements or appearance standards.

Solution:

Wear plain clothing without patterns or logos. Remove glasses. Ensure your face is fully visible. Keep a neutral expression. Women wearing religious head coverings may keep them on as long as the face is fully visible.

Mistake 6: Missing the Appointment

Passport appointments are time-sensitive. Missing your slot means rescheduling, which could add weeks to your timeline.

Solution:

Arrive 15-30 minutes before your appointment time. Keep traffic and weather conditions in mind. If you cannot attend, reschedule online as early as possible.

Mistake 7: Not Updating Address Before Renewal

If you have moved since your last passport was issued but did not update your address, the police verification may go to your old address, causing delays.

Solution:

Update your address in the renewal application. Have current address proof ready. Police verification for address changes may add time to the process.

Mistake 8: Applying for Tatkal Without Understanding the Requirements

Tatkal (urgent) passport renewal has stricter requirements and higher fees. Many applicants apply for Tatkal without understanding the additional documentation needed.

Solution:

Tatkal applications require additional identity verification. Carry extra address and identity proofs. The fee is higher (INR 2,000 extra). Processing takes 1-3 working days after the appointment.

Timeline for Passport Renewal

  • Normal application – 15-30 working days
  • Tatkal application – 1-3 working days after appointment
  • Re-issue (damaged/lost) – 30-45 working days
