USA B1/B2 Visa Interview Tips & Common Questions

How to Prepare for Your USA B1/B2 Visa Interview

The United States visa interview is arguably the most nerve-wracking part of the American visa application process. Unlike many other countries where visa decisions are based purely on documents, the US B1/B2 visa requires a face-to-face interview at the US Embassy or Consulate. At Sky Visa in Indore, we have coached hundreds of applicants through this process, and we know exactly what consular officers look for. This guide shares our best tips and the most common questions you should prepare for.

Understanding the B1/B2 Visa

The B1/B2 visa is a non-immigrant visa for temporary visitors to the United States:

  • B1 Visa – For business purposes such as meetings, conferences, negotiations, and consultations
  • B2 Visa – For tourism, vacation, visiting family or friends, medical treatment, or social events

Most applicants apply for a combined B1/B2 visa which covers both purposes. If you are unsure whether you need a B1, B2, or another visa type, consult with Sky Visa for personalized advice.

Before the Interview: Preparation Checklist

Documents to Carry

  • Valid passport (current and old passports)
  • DS-160 confirmation page with barcode
  • Visa appointment confirmation letter
  • Passport-sized photograph (51mm x 51mm, US specifications)
  • Bank statements for the last 6 months
  • Income tax returns for the last 3 years
  • Employment letter or business proof
  • Property documents (if any)
  • Travel itinerary and hotel bookings
  • Invitation letter (if visiting someone)
  • Previous travel history proof (old visa stamps, boarding passes)

Organize your documents neatly in a folder so you can quickly present any document the officer requests. Our document preparation service helps you create a perfectly organized application file.

What to Wear

Dress formally or semi-formally. Think of it as a job interview. Clean, professional attire creates a positive first impression. Avoid flashy jewelry or casual clothing like flip-flops and shorts.

Most Common US Visa Interview Questions

About Your Trip

  1. Why do you want to visit the United States? – Be specific about your plans
  2. How long do you plan to stay? – Give exact dates
  3. Where will you stay? – Name your hotel or host
  4. Have you been to the US before? – Mention any previous visits
  5. What places do you plan to visit? – Show you have a clear itinerary

About Your Finances

  1. Who is sponsoring your trip? – Clearly explain funding source
  2. What is your annual income? – State your salary or business income
  3. Do you have property or assets in India? – Mention real estate, investments, business

About Your Ties to India

  1. What do you do for a living? – Explain your job or business clearly
  2. Are you married? Do you have children? – Family ties are strong anchors
  3. Why will you return to India? – This is the most critical question; demonstrate compelling reasons to come back

Top Tips for a Successful Interview

  1. Be confident and calm – Nervousness is natural but practice helps. Speak clearly and make eye contact
  2. Keep answers concise – Answer what is asked without over-explaining. The interview typically lasts only 2 to 5 minutes
  3. Never lie – Consular officers are trained to detect deception. Dishonesty leads to instant rejection and possible future bans
  4. Show strong ties to India – Your job, property, family, and financial commitments should clearly indicate you will return
  5. Do not memorize scripted answers – Speak naturally as if having a conversation
  6. Bring supporting documents but do not volunteer them – Only show documents when asked
  7. Maintain a positive attitude – Even if the officer seems stern, stay polite and composed

What Happens After the Interview?

The consular officer will inform you of the decision at the end of your interview:

  • Approved – Your passport will be sent for visa stamping and returned within a few days
  • Administrative Processing (221g) – Additional review is needed; this may take weeks to months
  • Refused (214b) – The most common refusal reason; it means you did not demonstrate sufficient ties to India

If your visa is refused, you can reapply with a stronger application. Our team at Sky Visa analyzes refusal reasons and helps build a more compelling case for reapplication.
